Wood Fencing — The Classic Choice, Done Right

Wood fencing has been the most popular choice for residential properties for generations — and it's easy to see why. It looks great, gives you real privacy, and you can customize just about everything: height, style, picket profile, stain color, and more. When it's built right with quality materials, a wood fence can last 15–20 years and become one of the features that makes your property stand out.

At Fence Works, we use only prime cedar and pressure-treated pine lumber on every wood fence we build. No low-grade materials, no shortcuts. We've been doing this for 25 years and we know the difference a quality build makes five and ten years down the road.

Wood fence installations include free old fence removal, thorough job-site cleanup, and our 1-year workmanship warranty. Financing available through Wisetack.

What Makes Wood the Right Choice

Natural Beauty

There's nothing quite like a fresh wood fence. The natural grain, the warmth of the material, the way it fits into a yard — it's a look that vinyl and aluminum just can't replicate. And you can paint it or stain it to match your home perfectly.

Full Privacy

A wood privacy fence gives you solid, complete privacy. Perfect for backyards where you want to enjoy your outdoor space without feeling like you're on display.

Highly Customizable

Wood is the most customizable fencing material available. We can build any height, any style — privacy, shadowbox, board-on-board, dog-ear, flat-top — and you can choose your stain or paint color.

Affordable Upfront

Wood has a lower upfront cost than vinyl or aluminum, making it the right choice for homeowners who want a quality fence without the premium price tag of other materials.

Great for Louisville Yards

Wood fences work well in Louisville's climate. Cedar, in particular, holds up well in Kentucky's humid summers and cold winters.

Material Options

Cedar Fencing

Cedar is our top recommendation for homeowners who want a wood fence that ages well. It has natural oils that make it resistant to rot, decay, and insects — without any chemical treatment. Cedar holds stain beautifully and tends to look great for years with minimal upkeep. It does cost a bit more than pressure-treated pine, but the longevity and appearance make it worth it for most homeowners.

Best for: Homeowners who want a premium wood fence that holds up well and looks great long-term

Pressure-Treated Pine

Pressure-treated pine is the most widely used fencing lumber and for good reason — it's durable, rot-resistant (due to chemical treatment), and more affordable than cedar. It's a solid choice for homeowners who want a quality wood fence without the premium cedar price point. Note: pressure-treated pine may have a slightly greenish tint when new that fades over time, and it can be painted or stained after it's fully dried out.

Best for: Budget-conscious homeowners who want a quality, long-lasting wood fence

Fence Styles Available

Privacy Fence

Full-coverage panels with boards placed tightly together side-by-side. Provides complete privacy and is the most popular wood fence style.

Board-on-Board

Boards overlap alternately on both sides of the rail. Provides privacy from both directions and has a clean, finished look from either side. Great for shared property lines.

Shadowbox

Similar to board-on-board but with slightly more spacing. Provides partial privacy while allowing some airflow.

Dog-Ear

Standard privacy fence style with the top corners of each board cut at a 45° angle. One of the most common styles in residential neighborhoods.

Flat-Top Picket

Clean, flat top profile with pickets spaced further apart. More decorative than functional for privacy, but looks great for front yards and property borders.

What to Expect: Wood Fence Care

We believe in being upfront with our customers. Wood fences are beautiful and versatile — but they do require some ongoing maintenance to stay looking great and performing well.

Clean It Annually

A basic rinse with a garden hose once a year keeps mildew and grime from building up. A power wash every few years is even better.

Re-Stain or Seal Every 2–3 Years

This is the most important maintenance step. Staining or sealing protects the wood from moisture, UV damage, and early rot. Skip this step and you'll shorten the life of your fence significantly.

Inspect Seasonally

Walk the fence each spring and fall. Look for loose boards, posts that may have shifted, signs of rot at the base, or any pest activity.

Natural Characteristics

Wood is a natural product. Some warping or splitting over time is normal and expected — it's not a defect. Our 1-year warranty covers workmanship defects, but not the natural behavior of wood.

With consistent care, a quality wood fence typically lasts 10–20 years. Cedar tends toward the higher end of that range.

Wood Fence Cost Information

Wood fencing is generally the most affordable fence option upfront.

Typical installed cost range: $15–$35 per linear foot depending on height, style, and material choice.

Wood Fence FAQ

How long does a wood fence last?

With regular maintenance — cleaning, staining, or sealing every 2–3 years — a quality wood fence typically lasts 10–20 years. Cedar tends to outlast pressure-treated pine because of its natural resistance to rot and insects. The better you maintain it, the longer it lasts.

Do you stain or seal the fence after installation?

We don't include staining in our standard installation. We recommend letting a new wood fence dry out for a few weeks before staining — especially with pressure-treated pine, which needs time to dry before it accepts stain properly. You can handle staining yourself or hire a painter, and we're happy to give recommendations.

Will the fence follow the slope of my yard?

Yes — our crews are experienced building on graded lots. We install wood fences to follow your grade smoothly and evenly, without the stair-step look. Just let us know during your estimate if your yard has significant slope.

Do you remove and haul away my old fence?

Yes, absolutely. Old fence removal and disposal is included on every Fence Works installation at no extra charge. We pull the old fence, load it up, and haul it away before we start building the new one.

What does your warranty cover for wood fences?

Our 1-year workmanship warranty covers defects in our labor and materials — things like improperly set posts, loose panels, or hardware failures. What it does not cover is the natural behavior of wood: minor warping, splitting, or checking over time are normal characteristics of wood products, not installation defects.

Do I need a permit to install a fence in Louisville?

Permit requirements vary by city and HOA. We recommend checking with your local municipality before starting any fence project. We can offer general guidance, but it's ultimately your responsibility to confirm whether a permit is required for your property.

How long does installation take?

Most residential wood fence installations are completed in a single day. Larger projects or properties with complex grading may take two days. We'll give you a clear timeline before we start.

Can you match my existing fence?

We can get close in most cases, but we can't guarantee an exact match — especially with older fences where the lumber has weathered and changed color over time. If you're adding on to an existing fence, let us know during the estimate and we'll talk through your options.
